“I don’t often paint the model looking at you because then the viewer becomes a participant in the painting. I don’t want that. By showing the model with her face turned aside, I allow the viewer to admire this special moment from the outside, with the choice to emphathize with the model or to see her as themselves or as someone that they know.”
