Great Blue Heron in Flight

Flattened by the mist, I saw this heron in flight as an image on a Japanese screen; this oriental influence is what prompted me to cut off its wing. The willow branches are a counterpoint to the bird’s shapes and help thrust him back into the mist. – Robert Bateman
